This weekend's blog homework is longer than previous assignments. This is because we have had to miss lesson time for other things. Instead of doing TWO posts, you need to do FOUR. Please write comments on:
- ONE question from Section A (Pages 48- 50)
- ONE question from Section B (51- 54)
- ONE question from Section C (55-57), and
- ONE response to someone else's post.
Make sure that you identify the number of each question you respond to. (ex- A1, A2, B3, C1, etc)
This is due in TUESDAY'S LESSON.
Section A (Pages 48-50)
1. In what ways could China claim to be an advanced society at the beginning of the 19th Century? In what ways could China be considered backwards at that time, from the perspective of other countries?
2. Why did the Manchu resist involvement and contact with Europeans?
3. What policies and practices of the Chinese government interfered with foreign trade, and what was their impact?
Section B (Pages 51-54)
1. Explain some of the reasons for tension between the Chinese and the British.
2. Re-read the Roper quote on page 51. What things about this message would have elicited a reaction from the British? How do you imagine they would have reacted?
3. In your opinion, should Lord Amherst have kowtowed to the Emperor? Why or why not?
4. What problems did the opium trade cause for China, other than the eventual wars that broke out with the British?
5. Re-read the letter from Lin Zexu to Queen Victoria. In what ways is he trying to be diplomatic, and not cause offense?
Section C (Pages 55-57)
1. Compare the complaints of the Chinese against the British, to those that the British held against the Chinese. (Name some of the most significant ones) Who had the most cause to be discontented?
2. In your opinion, what were the most important terms of the Treaty of Nanjing? How was the treaty likely to lead to future conflict?
3. How were the treaties (Nanjing and Tientsin) advantageous to the British?
4. The Opium Wars, while not hidden or denied, do not feature very prominently in the curriculum of schools in Britain and the United States. What explanation would you give for this?
5. How did Western Influence affect China?
